This CD presents amongst others three newly commissioned works featuring the horn.
Fantasia, by Joseph Vella, was to be his last completed work in his long and prolific career. It was written specifically for Argotti Ensemble and is scored for two violins, horn and piano. The playful exchange of dialogue between the various instruments brings out the imaginative and rhapsodic mood of the the Fantasia.
Sonata Sopra Agnus Dei by Maltese composer Alex Vella Gregory was also written for this ensemble. Built around a Maltese baroque painting, the artistic elements are reflected in the four different voices, with the horn representing the figure of Christ.
Gabriel García Martínez’s Apocalipsis for horn and piano is based on the apocalyptic prophecies of the readings of the Book of Revelation by St. John. It explores the technical possibilities of the horn to the utmost together with a strongly supportive piano accompaniment.
The album also includes Schumann’s well-known Adagio and Allegro and Reinhold Glière’s beautifully lyrical Four Pieces for horn and piano.
